Payroll Brain Teaser

The Question:
Randy, the owner of a security services firm incorporated soon after 9/11, decides he wants to implement an employee length-of-service award program as his initial hires approach their five-year anniversaries. He tells Diane, the company's payroll manager, that he plans on giving each five-year veteran a personalized wrist watch worth $1,200. According to Randy, one of the firm's buyers has even found the perfect supplier. From a payroll perspective, however, Diane wonders whether FIT withholding, FICA, and FUTA would apply to the awards.
Would they?

Thanks to APA members like you, teenagers across the country will soon learn all about paychecks on the first “Money Matters” National Education Day, to be held during National Payroll Week on September 8, 2006!

This special day will unite APA chapters and members in an effort to educate high school students and youth groups on important financial literacy topics related to their paychecks.
